There's no single "right" way to handle a small project—what works for a muddy job site in Oregon won't fly in a dry Arizona backyard. After eight years handling service orders for Yanmar equipment and making (and documenting) my share of screw-ups, I've found that the real question is: which situation are you in?

My mistake: I assumed bigger and more capable was always better. In reality, for confined spaces with soft ground, the weight distribution and ground pressure matter more than bucket size. A 15t excavator (roughly 33,000 lbs) applies a ground pressure of about 4-5 psi depending on track width. For a properly compacted gravel base, that's fine. For lawn or clay, it'll leave a mess.
What I do now: I ask three questions before suggesting any excavator:
1. What's the access width?
2. What's the ground condition (lawn, gravel, concrete)?
3. What's the reach and lift requirement?
For a typical small site (under 2,000 sq ft), a 5-8 ton machine like the Yanmar SV40 or SV60 is almost always a better fit. The 15t is for larger utility work or road building—not a backyard.
Early in my career, I was confident I could swap a Yanmar diesel fuel filter in ten minutes. I'd done it on older engines (pre-2015) and it was a simple swap—no bleeding needed. Then I tried the same technique on a 2020 Yanmar 4TNV98 engine. The engine cranked, wouldn't start, and I ended up replacing a $1,200 injection pump because of air lock damage.
The hard lesson: Modern Yanmar common-rail diesels require the entire fuel system to be fully primed after filter replacement. The old method of "fill the filter with diesel and screw it on" doesn't work—air gets trapped in the high-pressure pump. Per Yanmar's service bulletin (as of 2024), you must use a manual priming pump or a dedicated priming tool to purge air at the fuel filter housing and the injection pump inlet.

I was on a wet November job in 2022, swapping out an undercarriage component on a Yanmar SV26. I'd brought my trusty breaker bar to break loose track adjuster bolts—those things are torqued to 480 Nm. After manually loosening with the breaker bar, I switched to an electric impact wrench to speed things up. The extension cord was lying in a puddle. The impact wrench had a three-prong plug but no GFCI protection. Halfway through, I got a shock that sent me stepping back—luckily only a tingle, but it could have been bad.
The fix is simple: Any electrical tool used outdoors or in damp conditions must be plugged into a GFCI breaker-protected outlet. GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) trips the circuit when it detects a leak as small as 4-6 milliamps—enough to prevent fibrillation. I now carry a portable GFCI adapter in my tool bag. It costs about $20 and has saved me (and my crew) many times.
One more thing: The breaker bar itself is fine—it's manual. But as soon as you add electricity, the risk multiplies. So use the breaker bar for initial loosening, then grab the impact gun—but make sure that gun is protected by a GFCI breaker.
I still laugh about this one—or, actually, I don't, because it cost me $450 in rework. I needed a small batch of concrete to set a post-mount for a Yanmar generator. I grabbed a 5-gallon bucket, a shovel, and a bag of Quikrete. I poured the mix, added water by eye, stirred, and poured. It seemed okay. Three days later the concrete was crumbly and cracked—the water-to-cement ratio was way off. I had to chip it all out and start over.
How to mix concrete in a bucket – correctly:
You need to know the exact water volume. For a standard 80-lb bag of Quikrete, the specs call for 0.6 gallons of water (about 2.3 liters). But that's for a full bag in a mixer—when mixing in a bucket, you're usually making a half or quarter batch. The key is measuring by weight or using a marked container. I now use a cheap kitchen scale and a 1-liter measuring cup.
