Choosing Between Yanmar Attachments, a Bucket Truck, and a Forklift: What $14,000 in Mistakes Taught Me

I'll be honest: I'm the person who buys the wrong machine. I've been running a small rural property and handyman business since 2017, and I've personally made and documented 11 significant equipment mistakes. Wasted budget: roughly $14,000. One mistake was a used attachment I bought for an old Yanmar diesel tractor. Another was renting a bucket truck when I should have rented a much smaller lift. The scariest mistake wasn't a machine at all—it was ignoring what a GFCI breaker actually does until an old shop fan tried to teach me the hard way.

This isn't a lecture. It's a field guide, written after enough expensive afternoons that I now keep a checklist on my phone. The main lesson I want to pass along is simple: there is no single answer to "what machine do I need." The right machine depends on the job, the surface, the height, and how often you'll honestly use it.

Start by sorting your real work into three buckets. Moving dirt and brush on the ground is tractor work. Putting a person in the air is access-equipment work. Lifting pallets of heavy material is forklift work. Those buckets overlap less than people think.

Scenario 1: You own a small, old diesel Yanmar tractor

If you have an old small Yanmar diesel tractor, you already know the situation. It isn't new, it isn't flashy, and it's paid for. A 1980s Yanmar compact with a 3-point hitch and a 540 rpm PTO can still be the most useful machine you own. The trouble starts when you realize that the list of Yanmar attachments seems endless. Blade, mower, backhoe, post-hole digger, loader. I was exactly that person.

My first significant trap was an attachment deal that fit on paper but not in real life. The hitch category was right, and the PTO speed was right. What I did not check was whether my tractor had rear hydraulic remotes for the attachment's hydraulic lines. It did not. I ended up buying a rear remote kit that cost almost double the price of the used attachment. The arithmetic looked fine until reality arrived.

The habit that finally fixed this problem is painfully boring: I wrote down the exact specs for my tractor and kept them on my phone with photos. Hitch class, lift capacity, PTO horsepower, hydraulic flow, top-link clearance, and wheel track width. Now, before I even look at Yanmar attachments for sale, I compare each spec against that list. If an attachment requires something the tractor doesn't have, I move on before I get emotionally attached to the deal.

One piece of advice here goes against what most attachment ads suggest: don't buy a backhoe attachment for a 20-ish horsepower older tractor. I know it looks like the ultimate add-on. But a rear backhoe on a small, lighter tractor can stress the transmission and axle housings, and it is painfully slow for serious digging. If you need to dig more than a few post holes, rent a compact excavator for the weekend. The right tool for a two-day digging project is not an attachment that will live on the tractor for years and get used twice.

The GFCI breaker side of the story

Before you run power to a barn, workshop, or temporary panel for lights, chargers, and tools, think about electrical protection. I did not, and I got lucky in the worst way.

I had an old metal shop fan in the barn. Its motor began leaking current to the fan housing—not enough to trip a regular 15-amp breaker, but enough to be dangerous. When my arm touched the housing and the grounded metal frame of the workbench at the same time, I felt a nasty buzzing jolt. The fan came apart later that afternoon, and the wire inside was rubbing against the motor shell.

That is what a GFCI breaker is for. A standard breaker trips at 15 or 20 amps, which is far too high to protect a person from a small ground fault. A GFCI breaker compares current going out on the hot wire with current returning on the neutral wire. When about 5 milliamps or more goes missing, it assumes the current is taking an unintended path—possibly through somebody—and it cuts the circuit in milliseconds.

The National Electrical Code now requires GFCI protection in most outdoor and temporary-power situations, including construction-site receptacles under NEC Article 590.6. But I didn't need a code citation to learn the lesson. I needed a $15 replacement fan and a new GFCI breaker in the subpanel. If you work around old equipment and damp conditions, do that upgrade before you test another attachment.

Scenario 2: You're convinced you need a bucket truck

A bucket truck is exactly what it sounds like: a truck with a boom and a bucket that raises a worker to height. It is the right machine when you regularly work on utility poles, streetlights, tall trees, or building exteriors at heights above 30 feet. Rental yards rent them by the day, and they are impressive machines. But they are also heavy, wide, and expensive to transport.

I once needed to replace four floodlights on a 25-foot pole and clear some dead branches near the shop roof. My first thought was bucket truck. It seemed like the professional choice. I rented one, and within an hour I realized the outriggers could not set up level on the slope beside the barn. After fighting with blocking and cribbing, I spent more time on setup than the actual work. A smaller towable boom lift would have reached the same height, fit into the same space, and cost less to rent.

Here is the counterintuitive advice: most small-property owners who ask about a bucket truck should rent a towable boom lift or use a properly rated scaffold instead. The only real advantage of a bucket truck is that it is street-legal and can drive itself between job sites at highway speed. If you're not moving between sites every day, you're paying for a truck engine, transmission, brakes, tires, and annual inspections that have nothing to do with the work in the bucket.

If you do work at height regularly, rent the bucket truck first. Use it on a few real jobs before you buy. Take notes on setup time, access issues, and storage. And never try to save money by lifting a person in an improvised bucket on a tractor loader. A person is not a pallet. Use equipment designed for people.

Scenario 3: You're asking yourself, what is a forklift?

I'm not embarrassed to say I researched "what is a forklift" before my first serious forklift purchase discussion. If you grew up around tractors but not warehouses, forklifts are easy to misunderstand.

A forklift is a powered industrial truck that uses two forks on the front to lift and move palletized loads. It is counterbalanced, meaning the heavy mass behind the operator offsets the load on the forks. OSHA treats forklifts as powered industrial trucks under 29 CFR 1910.178, and in a workplace, operators need proper training and certification.

The reason this matters is that a forklift is not an all-purpose material handler. It works best on hard, level surfaces like concrete or asphalt. It does not like deep gravel, mud, or soft pasture. If you need to move pallets on uneven ground, what you actually need may be a rough-terrain forklift or a telehandler—a completely different machine with a boom.

The mistake I nearly made was buying a used diesel forklift to move feed pallets around a gravel yard. On the concrete floor at the seller's lot, the forklift was smooth and capable. At my place, it would have sunk in the mud every winter. When I added the cost of laying a concrete pad, annual maintenance, and the fact that I honestly moved heavy pallets about four times a year, the decision flipped. I bought a heavy-duty pallet jack instead and arranged for palletized deliveries to come with a liftgate. That solved 90% of the problem for less than a tenth of the price.

So, what is a forklift? It is the right answer when you have a hard, level operating surface and a recurring need to lift pallets weighing hundreds or thousands of pounds. If you only need to slide one pallet at dock height, a pallet jack may be the smarter purchase. If you need to move loose material, gravel, or dirt, the old Yanmar tractor with the right attachment is often the better machine.

The checklist I use before every equipment decision

After the $14,000 of mistakes, I stopped trusting my gut and started trusting a process. Before I buy or rent anything, I answer four questions in writing:

  • What exactly am I moving—dirt, a person, or a pallet?
  • How high and how heavy is the load, with real numbers?
  • How often will this machine actually be used?
  • Is the site firm, level, and safe—and is the temporary power protected by a GFCI breaker where needed?

If the job is ground work, I shop attachments that fit the old Yanmar tractor's actual specs, and I skip the backhoe temptation. If the job is lifting a person, I rent access equipment for the specific reach and terrain, and I don't assume a bucket truck is the default. If the job is pallets, I ask whether a forklift is truly required or whether a pallet jack and a liftgate can do it.

That checklist has already caught 22 potential mistakes in the past 18 months. Equipment is expensive, but the most expensive part is usually the second purchase after the first one fails.
