How to Test a Yanmar Fuel Pump: A Sunday Call That Saved a VIO35 Job

Last July, a contractor called me on a Sunday evening. He had a Yanmar VIO35 mini excavator that had been running rough all week, and then it quit on the job site. How to Test a Fuel Pump on a Yanmar VIO35

  1. Crack the bleeder screw on the fuel filter or filter head. If fuel weeps out, the filter is getting fuel. If nothing comes out, the problem is upstream: the tank, the pickup screen, or the suction line.
  2. Work the hand primer. On most Yanmars, it's a plunger on the filter head. It should get firm after a few strokes. If it stays soft and you see bubbles, air is getting into the suction side. That's usually a line or an O-ring leak.
  3. Look for air in the return line. A short piece of clear hose on the return bleed will show you if the system is pulling air. Bubbles while priming mean you have a leak somewhere.
  4. If the pump is electric, listen and check voltage. Turn the key and listen for clicking. Then put a meter on the connector. More than once, the pump was fine but the ground wire was dead.
  5. Check the stop solenoid. The fuel cutoff solenoid needs to click when the key comes on. If it doesn't, the engine won't get fuel, no matter how good the pump is. It feels like a dead fuel pump, but it isn't one.

We went through all five steps that Sunday. The pump was pumping. The filter looked clean. But when we checked the pickup screen at the bottom of the tank, it was almost black with algae. The pump was pulling fuel, just not enough. The screen was $25. The filter kit was around $60 based on our parts orders in early 2025. The contractor was back in the dirt by 9:30 the next morning.

His alternative was a rush lift pump, freight, and a service call. That bill would've been over $600, and the excavator still wouldn't have started.

Why I Almost Ordered the Wrong 3GM30 Parts

A few weeks later, that same checklist stopped me from making a different mistake. A customer called about Yanmar 3GM30 parts for his sailboat engine. It would start cold, then die after a few minutes. He was convinced the injection pump needed a rebuild.

I asked him to crack the bleeder screw and work the primer before I sent anything. Fuel came out, but it had foam in it. We checked the return line and found a hairline crack. Air couldn't enter the tank, so fuel couldn't leave it. Another time, a diesel sump pump at a commercial site kept losing prime in the fuel system. Lessons Learned

If there's one thing I want you to take from this, it's to check the cheap stuff first. Not as busywork, but because the cheap stuff fails more often than the expensive pump. Here are a few rules I now follow:

  • Use the fuel system checklist before you order parts. It's the cheapest insurance you can put on a diesel.
  • Listen to data, but trust your gut when the machine has been sitting. If it parked for a while, look for algae, mice, and air leaks before you blame the lift pump.
  • Don't gamble with budget filters. I tried to save $30 once on a non-Yanmar fuel filter. It collapsed internally and made the pump work twice as hard. The OEM filter was worth it.
  • Avoid the parts cannon. I learned this in my first year when I sold a fuel pump for a generator without testing the old one. The original pump was fine; the tank had water in it. That waste still bothers me.

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. When a machine is down, your first instinct is to throw parts at it. Your second instinct should be to run a simple fuel supply test.
