It was a Tuesday afternoon in early March 2022. I was standing on a job site in eastern Ohio, staring at a Yanmar mini excavator I’d just brought in, and feeling pretty good about the day. My crew had finished demo on a small commercial lot, and the plan was to load the debris, compact it on-site, and haul it out. Simple stuff.
Except—and this is where the story goes sideways—I had not, in fact, checked the specs on the trash compactor I’d rented. I assumed (first mistake) that any compactor would work with any machine. We’d handled similar jobs before, but this one had a twist that caught me flat-footed.
I’d been running my own small demolition and hauling operation for about four years at that point. I thought I had a solid handle on equipment matchups. I was wrong.
The job looked straightforward: clear a 1.2-acre site that had a few old sheds, concrete pads, and some random junk left behind by the previous tenant. The client wanted everything gone in a week. I brought a Yanmar SV18 mini excavator (18 hp diesel, about 4,000 lbs), a skid steer for loading, and rented a trash compactor from a local rental yard. The rental guy asked me, “You got the right mounting plate for your machine?” I said yes.
I did not have the right mounting plate.
In my defense, the compactor looked like it would fit. The pins lined up—sort of. But here’s what I didn’t know: the flow rate on the Yanmar SV18’s hydraulic system is about 11.5 gallons per minute. That compactor needed at least 18 GPM to operate efficiently. I didn’t think to check that. I looked at the physical connectors and thought we were good.
We started compacting. For about twenty minutes, it worked okay. Then the compactor slowed down. Then it stopped. The hydraulics on the excavator were struggling, the compactor wasn’t getting enough flow, and we were burning time. I had a crew of three waiting, a rental clock ticking, and a deadline looming.
That’s when I made the second mistake: I tried to force it. I bumped up the throttle on the Yanmar, thinking more RPMs would push more fluid through the system. It didn’t work. Instead, I got a loud grinding sound from the compactor’s hydraulic motor—a sound I will never forget—followed by a complete shutdown.
The rental yard sent a mechanic two hours later. He took one look and said, “Wrong compactor for that machine. Your hydraulic output is too low. This unit’s fried.” The total: $2,400 for repairs to the compactor, plus a $600 fee for the downtime and the replacement unit I had to rent for the rest of the job. I ate the cost. The job barely broke even.
But here’s what really stung. I’d been in the game long enough to know better. I had manuals. I had a phone. I could’ve called the Yanmar dealer or the rental yard and asked one simple question: “What are the hydraulic requirements for this attachment?” I didn’t. I assumed.
Most equipment operators (and I’ve talked to dozens since this happened) focus on the obvious stuff: pin sizes, mounting plates, weight limits. They check if the attachment will physically connect. What they miss—what I missed—is the hydraulic match. The flow rate and pressure requirements of the attachment versus the machine’s output.
It’s an easy oversight because it’s not visible. You can look at a compactor and see if it’ll bolt on. You can’t see the hydraulic curve. And most rental yards don’t volunteer that information unless you ask. I learned the hard way: always ask for the flow and pressure specs before you book the rental.

The second time around, I rented a smaller compactor—a plate compactor that ran on the SV18’s auxiliary hydraulics without issues. It was slower, but it worked. I finished the job in six days instead of five, but I stayed under budget because I didn’t blow up another rental. That’s the real lesson, I think: speed matters, but avoiding a $3,000 mistake matters more.
Now, every time I bring in a Yanmar machine for a job, I pull the hydraulic specs before I even look at attachments. I’ve got the numbers memorized for most of the models we use: SV18 (11.5 GPM, 2,900 PSI), VIO35 (14.8 GPM, 3,000 PSI), VIO55 (19.6 GPM, 3,000 PSI). I could rattle them off in my sleep. That’s what a $3,000 mistake buys you: permanent memory.
I’m not saying I never mess up anymore. But I’ve gotten a lot better at asking the right questions. If I could go back to my 2019 self, I’d say this: the vendor who lists all the specs upfront—including what’s NOT compatible—is worth trusting, even if their total price looks higher. Because the cost of one wrong attachment can eat up every saving you thought you made.
The machine (in this case, a Yanmar mini excavator) is a tool. It’s a good tool. But it’s not magic. You have to know its limits. You have to respect the numbers. And you have to check the hydraulic specs before you assume anything will work.
