If a crew of two is idle for a day on a $850/day machine, that's $1,700 in lost production right there. Add the rush fee and you're still ahead if you can get the fix done in 24 hours instead of 72.

I've never fully understood why some shops quote wildly different 'rush' premiums. My best guess is it comes down to how well they know their own inventory and technician schedules. A shop that has to order a part from a distributor will charge a higher markup than one that has it sitting on a shelf.

What This Doesn't Cover

This approach works for standard serviceable parts—filters, hoses, belts, common attachments. It won't work if the part is obscure or requires engine teardown.
