It was 2:17 on a Friday afternoon when the well pump stopped. Not slowly. Not dramatically. Just a click, a hum, and then nothing. The kind of silence that makes a farm manager look at the calendar and start doing mental math.
I manage procurement for a 40-person farm and facility maintenance company. While we waited for the engine, we had to dig out the old well head. That meant pulling our mini excavator back into service. The bucket on it had been through a lot—worn edge, cracked weld, more patches than I could count. I asked the same supplier for a replacement quote.
He came back with a Yanmar mini excavator bucket. Price: $850. A generic online option was $690. Difference: $160.
Here's why I didn't hesitate. The Yanmar bucket came with the right attachment geometry for our machine, included a hardened cutting edge, and was going to arrive on the same skid as the engine—no extra freight charge. The $690 bucket would have saved $160 and then cost me a custom adapter, separate shipping, and a trip to a fabricator to make it fit. By the time it was useful, it would have been the $1,100 bucket.
The dealer didn't try to upsell me. He just asked what machine it was going on and said, 'Then you want the Yanmar bucket. The geometry is different.' That's a vendor who understands TCO.
The cheapest bucket in the search results is not the cheapest bucket in the world. It's just the cheapest one before you count everything else.
