The lowboy arrived at 7:40 on a gray Thursday in late March 2024. I remember the time because I had just poured a coffee, and the transport coordinator shouted my name before I could get a sip. A half ton truck gets its name from an old payload rating of about 1,000 pounds. Modern half tons are stronger, with payload ratings usually between 1,200 and 2,300 pounds, depending on cab, bed, drivetrain, and options. The payload sticker inside the driver's door is the number that matters. The name doesn't mean the truck itself weighs half a ton, and it doesn't tell you the trailer rating.

The 5.5-ton mini excavator weighs about 12,000 pounds before you add a bucket and tracks. Loaded trailer weight will commonly exceed 15,000 pounds. That needs a proper truck and trailer combination, not a half ton pickup and a rental yard. We sent the mini out with a one-ton truck and a trailer rated for the load. The contractor grumbled about the hauling cost. That grumbling is part of my job.

What that delivery changed for me

Both machines eventually passed. The 15t needed no rework. The mini got a new relay socket, a fresh battery, and another full cycle of startup checks. The customer picked it up two days later with a one-ton truck and a trailer that could carry the weight. He wasn't thrilled, but his only complaint was about the extra rental cost.

Part of me wanted to make the hand-off easy. Another part knows why I have a job. In 2022, we missed a wiring issue on a different machine. It started as a faint smell in the cab and ended as a console fire during a customer demonstration. That repair cost us $22,000 and a lot of trust. The grumpy phone call was cheaper.
