Which Yanmar mini excavator models should be on your shortlist?

Yanmar mini excavator models come in two common series: the SV line and the VIO line. As of January 2025, Yanmar's spec pages list compact excavators like the SV17, SV26, SV34, SV40, SV52, plus the VIO35 and VIO50. Your local dealer may carry a slightly different set, so don't treat this as the full model map for every region.

If you're just getting into compact machines, I'd demo an SV26 and a VIO50 before you buy. The SV26 is small enough to fit through standard gates and still has the digging power for retaining walls. The VIO50 is a larger 5-ton-class machine that gives you more reach and breakout force. Honestly, most of our jobs could live with one or the other, but the operator who runs it will have a strong opinion. Let them drive both before you spend the money.

Before you compare spec sheets, think about reach, bucket force, and whether you need auxiliary hydraulics for attachments. Operators care about arm geometry and visibility more than paint color. A cheap machine that can't reach into a trench is not a deal.

What is a Yanmar B50 final drive?

A final drive is the sealed unit at the end of a track frame that turns the track sprocket. It contains a hydraulic motor, planetary gears, and usually a brake. When an excavator spins one track or won't move, this is one of the first things a mechanic checks.

The Yanmar B50 is an older compact excavator from Yanmar's B-series, roughly in the 5-ton class. So a "Yanmar B50 final drive" is the final drive assembly used on that machine. The part still shows up in dealer systems because plenty of B50s are still working every day.

What most people don't realize is that the same model can have different final drive ratios depending on serial number range. I made that mistake in a small way with a seal kit, and our mechanic caught it before install. If you're ordering a B50 final drive, get the machine's serial number and the original part number. Don't rely on a listing that says "fits B50." I get why buyers want a cheap, fast parts option, but a wrong final drive means a week of downtime and a restocking headache.

When you get final drive quotes, ask if the part is new, remanufactured, or used. We almost bought a used B50 final drive because the price was half, but the vendor couldn't tell me how many hours were on it. I passed. That felt unreasonable until the new part was installed and did not come back.

Should you buy a used Yanmar B50 or a newer model?

If you're looking at a used B50 because it's cheaper than a current SV26, you're right that the upfront number is lower. But everything I'd read about buying equipment said to focus on the iron. In practice, I found that the parts network and dealer distance matter just as much. The B50 is a good machine, but "old iron" can disappear into downtime quickly.

A few of our operators learned on old B-series Yanmar machines, and they liked them. That is not the same as saying every old B50 is a smart purchase. Compare the total picture: a new SV26 with a warranty and local dealer support versus a 20-year-old B50 with worn pins, old hoses, and final drives that may be due for service. If you only run it 100 hours a year, the old machine might make sense. If it's your main revenue generator, buy the newer one.

Also think about depreciation. A new SV26 will still have resale value in five years. A B50 with 8,000 hours will not. That changes the true cost.

Yanmar mini excavator vs Kubota skid steer: which do you buy?

This question came up constantly when we compared a Yanmar mini excavator and a rented Kubota skid steer side by side on a retaining-wall job. Seeing both machines work the same site made me realize they are not substitutes. The excavator digs below grade, slopes, and works around obstacles. The skid steer pushes spoil, backfills, and runs attachments like pallet forks.

To be fair, Kubota's skid steer lineup is strong. We have rented Kubota skid steers more than once, and they do exactly what they're designed to do. But if a supplier says "you don't need an excavator, just get a Kubota skid steer," that's a red flag. Different tools, different jobs.

My rule of thumb: buy the excavator if your revenue work is digging. Rent a skid steer for specific tasks like backfilling or snow removal. A Kubota skid steer makes sense to own only if you have enough flat-site loading and material handling to keep it busy.

In a tight residential backyard, a skid steer feels very wide. The mini excavator's rubber tracks and the zero-tail-swing option on some models are the difference between fitting and damaging a fence.

Why keep a Honda generator in the same equipment plan?

I'll be honest: when our crew first asked for a Honda generator, I thought it was a brand preference. It's really a need for portable jobsite power. We run a Honda EU2200i because it weighs around 47 pounds, which means it fits in a 3/4-ton truck bed without engineering a lift plan. It powers lights, a small hammer drill, and battery chargers. For bigger electric tools, we'd move up to a larger generator, but for daily service calls this one works.

This is not a Yanmar vs Honda thing. Yanmar also makes generator sets, but they are usually configured for larger standby or mobile power needs. If you need a small inverter-style generator you can grab with one hand, a Honda generator is the category leader for a reason. Don't hold me to the exact weight—check Honda's current specs before ordering, because model lines change.

Inverter generators are also easier on power tools and quieter than conventional units. That matters when a crew is working near occupied buildings.

What is a 3/4 ton truck, and can it tow a Yanmar?

A 3/4 ton truck sits between a half-ton pickup and a one-ton pickup. Think Ford F-250, Chevy Silverado 2500, or Ram 2500. The name goes back to payload capacity: a half-ton carried about 1,000 lbs, a 3/4-ton was rated around 1,500 lbs, and a one-ton around 2,000 lbs. Those names stuck, but modern trucks are far stronger than those old numbers.

For towing a compact excavator, "3/4 ton" alone does not tell you enough. You need the door sticker. Check payload, rear axle rating, trailer GVWR, and the gross combined weight rating. A small Yanmar like an SV26 plus trailer might sit around 7,800 lbs, and a properly equipped 3/4-ton truck can handle that. A larger machine like a VIO50 can put you near 14,000 lbs with trailer, which often pushes you into one-ton truck territory. That is not a guess—it is axle math.

Federal highway vehicle classifications put many 3/4-ton pickups into Class 2B, which is 8,501 to 10,000 lbs gross vehicle weight rating. Some configurations cross into Class 3. Always verify the specific truck build you plan to use.

Also check the trailer's rating before you assume the truck is the weak link. A cheap trailer with a 7,000 lb GVWR can still be overloaded by a VIO50.

What should an admin buyer verify before ordering Yanmar parts?

In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I moved some parts orders to a new supplier to save about 9% on the invoice. It looked great until the wrong final drive part showed up and the return process took three weeks. That $1,800 restocking fee taught me to check five things before sending a PO:

  1. Machine model and serial number.
  2. Original part number or OEM reference.
